A poet is a story teller by: Ayesha Nura and Thobs the Zulu Queen

Poem collab with Ayesha Nura

A poet is a story teller
She does not merely make words rhyme
Or make various verbs align to define
Actions that sound tricky…or, at the very least…extracurricular.

A poet is a story teller
She recalls the love and pain
Passion and glory that echoes in every story
Of loved ones past and present
Ancestral presents are presented to her
To unfold.
She molds the minds and timelines
Of ancient kings and queens into her piece
She learned to release her fears
In the lessons she shares
Of those who once dared
To escape on foot
Having to wade in the water
Searching for candlelight in rooms
While dodging whites from saloons
Brandishing crosses and guns.
Find Christ…in the tomb.
I bongi yehlabati  (poet of the earth)
Ukuluma izinto abana mehlo bazobona
Abana amahlebe bazozwa
Cos yes a poet is more than the story teller
But through patience and observation she weaves stories
Stories whispered to her by the ancient spirits waiting for their story to be told
So the living may hear for things happen to the living that only the dead can understand
Singa ba ntwana bokukhanya children of the light
She weaves stories like patterns of the rising  sun
Set apart from birth she collect stories
Keeping in mind that
week men collect gold forgetting gold can easily be a philosophers stone
She is ancient in living young at heart
Her ways are sure
and truthful are her stories
Here she is ibongi yabahlali (poet of the soil)
Here she is intombi ye langa (woman of the sun)
A poet is a story teller...
