PRINCESS MAGOGO RISE OF A STAR PLAY

The Play

Princess Magogo the rise of a star.

When I was in Barbados I was inspired to write a play based on a true story of Princess Magogo a Zulu Princess, inspired by my experience on the observation that There is a dying connection with the rich cultures of Africa and Barbados this play, set in the 1900’s is a confirmation of the linkage through culture, to set right understanding of cultural ways of South Africa’s  most powerful tribe amaZulu and also highlighting the role and importance of artists and women in preservation of culture and its stories. It highlights the importance of identity, know thyself and self-preservation.

This two part play is based on the true story of Princess Magogo Dinuzulu, the Zulu Princess who revolutionised Zulu tribal music long before apartheid and Nelson Mandela and describes how she was able to bring about an empowering change for women who were never allowed to become praise poets and singers. She is to me like the Bob Marley of Zulu music and inspired as Mariam Makeba and many more and she put South African music on the map of the world. The play explores the culture of the Zulu and through the eyes of Magogo’s takes the audience on an enchanting journey of Zulu expression and song.

I used an all Bajan cast who through hard work and shaping by the director Sonia S Williams were able to sing and dance like Zulus it was an amazing experience the play was staged 2 nights with a great attendance with great reviews too.

Thank  you to the Bajan community that supported me through the process and man where their challenges but all was overcome with pure determination of starting something and finishing it and I hope the actors and actresses get the recognition they deserve.
